IRC Basics

Registering your Nickname
Your nickname, or nick for short, is the name that you will use when you join the IRC server. For security purposes you are required to register a nick with nickerv. The following command allows you to do that: /nickserv register (password) (e-mail) The password should be something that you can easily remember but not readily accessible to other people and e-mail address is your personal e-mail. You will be sent a message from the server about confirmation of this account. It is not until you confirm the nick that your nick is fully registered. You may do this by following the instructions in the e-mail.

Identifying your Nickname
Whenever you join the IRC server you must identify your registered nick for security purposes. The identify feature allows you and any one else that knows your password to use your nickname to join channels, become AOP, etc. Be sure to keep your password private as anyone that gets it can assume your identity. So identify your nick use this command /nickserv identify (nick) (password) . Nick will be the nickname that you used to register with and password would be the password that you used to register your nick with.

Joining A Channel
Joining channels is the start of the IRC experience after your nickname is registered and identified. To do that use the following command: /join #channel (IE. /join #empire).

Actions
IRC not only allows the user to chat but also incorporates the ability to use actions within the channel. By using the command /me (action) IRC will set the text up so that is stands out from regular text messaging so that actions and words are easily discernable.

Examples of Actions Commands in IRC
/me salutes!
/me walks to the chair and sits.
/me stands guard at the room’s entrance.

Private Messages
If you wish to privately message someone on the chat server, you may use the command /msg (user) (your message).

Whois Command
The whois command allows the user to receive a couple bits of details about the user that they use it on. Including name, if the nick is identified, and idle time. To use this command type in /whois (user)
